WebAssembly in 2025: Beyond the Browser

WebAssembly started as a way to run C++ in the browser. In 2025 the real momentum is server-side.

Three places Wasm is winning

  1. Edge compute — Cloudflare Workers, Fastly Compute@Edge, Vercel Edge Functions. Cold starts in microseconds, not hundreds of milliseconds.
  2. Plugin systems — Envoy, Istio, Shopify Functions, OBS Studio, Postgres extensions. Sandboxed, deterministic, language-agnostic.
  3. Polyglot apps — call Rust crypto from Python, or run Python inside a JS app via Pyodide.

The Component Model + WASI 0.2

The Component Model (stable in 2024) defines a typed interface between Wasm modules using WIT (Wasm Interface Types). WASI Preview 2 builds on it with portable system APIs:

  • wasi:filesystem — sandboxed file access
  • wasi:http — outbound and inbound HTTP
  • wasi:io — byte streams

This means the same .wasm runs on Node, Wasmtime, Bun, browsers, and edge platforms — with capability-based security.

Languages that compile cleanly

  • Rust — best ecosystem, smallest binaries.
  • Go — TinyGo for small modules; standard Go for full runtime.
  • Python — via Pyodide / componentize-py.
  • C/C++ — via Emscripten / wasi-sdk.
  • JavaScript — yes, JS-in-Wasm via SpiderMonkey / QuickJS embeddings.

Where it does not make sense

  • Heavy DOM manipulation — JS still wins.
  • Apps that need threads + shared memory + low latency on every browser (still rough on Safari).

Try it today

wasmtime serve component.wasm is the simplest “hello world” component server. Combine with WIT bindings and you have a portable microservice in any compiled language.
